Advertising for R.R. Bowker's Books In Print data

Background:

When these ads ran, bookstores had 2 ways of getting data about books:  they could purchase the data from Books In Print, or they could get the data free from online resources or book distributors. 

The approach:

Free data sounded good to most bookstores ... until these ads helped them realize that the free data was designed to improved the source's profitability, not the bookstore's.
